A recent analysis by Carbon Pulse has highlighted the emerging European nature credit marker and PFI’s role on the newly established EU expert group on nature credits. The new expert group has begun advising on a potential EU-wide biodiversity market, with early debates focusing on regulation, governance, and alignment with existing EU laws such as the Nature Restoration Law (NRL) and the Common Agricultural Policy.

2025 was a landmark year for Peatland Finance Ireland (PFI), as the organisation strengthened its position as Ireland’s national vehicle for mobilising blended finance for peatland restoration. PFI achieved significant progress this year, including the launch of V1.0 of the Peatland Standard for Ireland, securing millions in private finance investment for restoration, and contributing to alignment between peatland restoration finance and national and EU policy frameworks.

PFI is pleased to announce its contribution to an international United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) initiative examining cooperation, collaboration, and complementarities between Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) at national level.

After long months of negotiation, the EU Omnibus negotiations seemed to be nearing their conclusion. However, recent developments in the European Parliament have proven difficult with long rounds of infighting on the Omnibus amendments between Parliament parties, which could lead to further delays and changes, which will ultimately determine future sustainability reporting requirements under the CSRD and the CSDDD.

Dublin, 26 August 2025 – Ireland’s peatlands, among the country’s most valuable natural ecosystems, are set for a major boost thanks to a landmark international investment. Global technology companies Meta, Microsoft, and Google have pledged more than €3 million to restore up to 450 hectares of degraded peatlands across Ireland.

Peatland Finance Ireland CLG (PFI) is seeking a dynamic and strategic Executive Director to guide the organisation through a critical stage of growth and impact. This part-time role (0.6 FTE) is ideal for a seasoned leader with a passion for climate and nature, and experience in the not-for-profit or environmental finance sectors.

It encompasses a broad range of activities, from funding renewable energy and sustainable agriculture to restoring ecosystems such as peatlands. But what exactly is green finance, and why is it so crucial in today’s world?

In November, PFI co-hosted a three-day Peatland Finance learning event in Dublin that explored policy alignment to facilitate investment in restoration.

On Thursday 30th June, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage Darragh O’Brien TD, and EIB Vice-President Christian Kettel-Thomsen formally agreed to strengthen cooperation for peatland restoration in Ireland with the European Investment Bank supporting NPWS efforts to accelerate the restoration of peatlands across the country.
