PFI Recognised as an International Case Study by United Nations Environment Programme

PFI is pleased to announce its contribution to an international United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) initiative examining cooperation, collaboration, and complementarities between Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) at national level.

As part of this work, UNEP and UNEP-WCMC have developed an analysis of global case studies hghlighting success stories and lessons learned in the implementation of MEAs. PFI’s work developing a national platform for peatland restoration and a national Peatland Standard has been selected as one of these case studies, reflecting its relevance to climate action, biodiversity protection, and sustainable finance.

The case study showcases how Ireland’s first Peatland Standard aligns with national and international environmental priorities, including:

  • Climate action commitments

  • National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs)

  • Nature-based solutions and habitat restoration

  • Innovative approaches to environmental financing.

Through this contribution, PFI has supported UNEP’s efforts to capture lessons learned and promote mutual learning between countries and institutions. The work will inform the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) and help strengthen global understanding of how environmental conventions can be implemented in a more integrated and effective way.

The case studies are now publicly available and will serve as a resource for policymakers, practitioners, and stakeholders working on climate, biodiversity, and ecosystem restoration worldwide.

PFI is proud to contribute to this international work and to support the continued development of high-quality standards for peatland protection and restoration in Ireland.
