Global Tech Leaders Back €3 Million Investment in Irish Peatland Restoration

Dublin, 26 August 2025 – Ireland’s peatlands, among the country’s most valuable natural ecosystems, are set for a major boost thanks to a landmark international investment. Global technology companies Meta, Microsoft, and Google have pledged more than €3 million to restore up to 450 hectares of degraded peatlands across Ireland.

Facilitated by Peatland Finance Ireland (PFI) through the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) and Agua Segura, this initiative will deliver measurable benefits for climate, water, biodiversity, and local communities.

Why Peatlands Matter

Peatlands are sometimes called Ireland’s “hidden giants.” They store more carbon than all other vegetation types combined, filter and regulate our water, and provide unique habitats for wildlife. When degraded, however, they become major emitters of greenhouse gases. Restoring them is one of the most cost-effective ways to fight climate change while improving water quality and protecting biodiversity.

What This Investment Will Do

  • Restore approximately 400–450 hectares of peatlands across Ireland.

  • Begin with a pilot site in the Wicklow Mountains Special Area of Conservation.

  • Provide long-term climate, water, and biodiversity benefits, backed by third-party verification under the Irish Peatland Standard.

  • Create additional benefits for local communities, including improved water quality and more resilient landscapes.

Voices From the Project

“Peatlands are one of Ireland’s most important ecosystems, and their restoration is a breakthrough opportunity to cut emissions and protect biodiversity. This investment shows growing international recognition of Ireland’s restoration potential.”

— Dr Shane Mc Guinness, Peatland Finance Ireland

“Nature finance can unlock local action at scale, but only when underpinned by rigorous standards and strong governance. This agreement is a breakthrough moment in showing how global investment can support Irish communities to revive their landscapes.”

— Paul Chatterton, Landscape Finance Lab & PFI Board

Backed by Global Partners

This funding commitment builds on earlier support from the Amazon Right Now Climate Fund and marks a major milestone for Ireland’s emerging nature finance ecosystem. Projects will be validated under the Irish Peatland Standard, developed with the support of the European Investment Bank, NPWS, DAFM, DCEE, and partners across research and conservation.
