Information about the Peatland Standard for peatland restoration projects, including information on how to apply.

On this page you will find out more about how to design your peatland restoration project and register your interest in signing up to the Peatland Standard for Ireland.

You will find information on project design, including the process, timeframes, level of guidance available and roles (who should do what and when).

If you’ve decided to begin a peatland restoration project and would like to become validated with the Peatland Standard, you will need to follow the process outlined below..

How does it work?

Peatland restoration projects - whether run by individuals, groups, or organisations - can use the Peatland Standard documents and templates to plan, register, and measure the long-term benefits their work will provide. These benefits include improvements to the ecosystem. The Peatland Standard is based on scientific evidence, which allows independent validation and verification bodies to confirm both the progress made and the future impact of the restoration. The process is results-driven, with regular checks to ensure progress. This allows individuals or organisations to buy or use the ecosystem certificates that are produced. Selling these certificates generates funds that can be used either for carrying out restoration work or for ongoing site management to keep the peatland in good condition.

Roles in the Process

A landowners' involvement can vary from being moderately involved (by engaging a project developer and investor), to being highly involved (in the restoration on the ground, monitoring and maintenance).

  • Certification Scheme – the Peatland Standard.

  • Validation & Verification Body (VVB) – independent third-party organisation working to ISO standards.

  • Project developer - restoration designer and operator who engages contractors to conduct baseline monitoring, groundworks and a long-term monitoring plan.

  • Registry – independent public registry containing project details. The registry will be held by the Peatland Standard for the pilot phase until 2027.
